The force of the shower could not quite assuage his tumultuous thoughts. Through the blur of water he could still visualize two pairs of eyes - Edge's green, hostile ones, and Christian's blue, fearful ones. And above the roar of the motor Edge's snarling words were set to constant re-play in his brain ".... ECW scum ... ECW scum...." There had been no words from Christian. If only he had spoken out, requested him to stay, he would have. But he didn't - he'd just turned away to pack his bag. Resentment and frustration battered his brain as he turned the shower up to maximum power - wishing the unforgiving force of the spray could also blast away his feeling of helplessness. If only Christian had asked.
With a sigh he stepped out the shower, towelling his hair dry. Carefully he combed through the brown strands to eliminate the tangles, before tying it back into a ponytail.
Reclining back against the pillows on his bed, he dug a book out of his bag and proceeded to attempt to find relaxation through reading. He read the words, each individual one, but they made no sense - he couldn't follow the plot, his mind was too busy running in frantic circles elsewhere.
Unbidden they came, images of Christian, images of Edge, along with half-remembered conversations and the feeling that perhaps he should have stayed. Then his brain took over from his heart - reasoning that he'd done the right thing by going. It wasn't his problem, and he shouldn't medde in their affairs. He'd done it once with the abused Jeff Hardy; they'd ended up in bed and the next day Jeff had accused him of rape - claiming he enjoyed the abusive relationship he had with Shane. Some of these WWF guys were crazy and he sure wasn't going to get dragged down that road again. Christian didn't seem to want his interference and hell, perhaps he enjoyed that kinda stuff too, perhaps that was the way they liked to play.
Determinedly he snapped the book shut. He didn't even feel like reading anyway, not when he couldn't concentrate and absorb even simple words. Resolutely he turned off the bedside lamp and slid under the covers.
******************************
It was 1am and sleep still eluded him. He banged the clock back down in annoyance. Images of a frightened and maybe pain-wracked Christian had besieged him each time he closed his eyes, though he must have slept and dreamt a little because he thought he'd heard a weak voice calling out for help in the dark. In frustration he buried his head under the pillow.
******************************
Two eyes shining through the dark - pleading voices drifting through the air - the eyes are drawing closer, the twin blue orbs enlarging and shimmering, threatening to engulf him body and soul, drag him within their shaded depths. Disembodied voices reaching for his mind - floating through his brain. Hands reaching out to draw him inside, escape impossible. Please release me ... He was caught in the swirling blue currents - his body descending to join voices in torment as they echoed around his drowning soul: help me ... His head was pounding, his heart was pounding, he couldn't breathe and still the hands dragged him deeper and deeper. Please release me ... Please let me go .... He couldn't draw back, couldn't resist, he didn't want to turn away, not now. Don't release me - don't let me go ... Drowning was the only way out. Caught in the tendrils of fragmented thoughts his head was bursting, pounding ... more pounding ...
Electrified, he shot up in bed, his face and body soaked in sweat. His heart was still pounding, and so was the door. With effort he forced away the remaining dredges of his nightmare. His breathing heavy he staggered over to the door and its frantic hammering. Wincing he put a hand to his throbbing temple before asking weakly:
"Who.... What ....?......" the words came out slurred.
"It's me - Christian ... please, Rob - let me in ....!"
