Christian pouted. His long velvety golden hair hung forward over his face, succeeding in its task at disguising the total hurt he was experiencing. Of all people - how could Edge have forgotten? For the last seven days he had been winding himself up to great expectancy: surreptitiously watching Edge for any furtive signs of activity and mystery. Normally Edge would be wearing a big secretive grin on his face for days beforehand in anticipation of the day ... but this time - nothing. It was as if it were just another day in just another week in just another month ... He glanced over at Edge now, reclined back in his easy chair, long legs crossed casually on top of the foot-stool in the most relaxed pose possible. He seemed engrossed in the small print of the paper - what the hell was he reading - lonely heart ads????

Christian scowled in his general direction. The whole day had all but passed - and Edge hadn't said a word - well not the ones he wanted to hear anyway - and as for presents - surprise gifts - a great big NADA! He, Christian, had been on tenterhooks waiting for a last minute "Gotcha - thought I'd forgotten hadn't ya?" - accompanied by Edge's evil teasing eyes savoring every minute of it. But no. He sighed aloud. Edge didn't raise his eyes a millimetre. He sighed louder - still nothing. Then he emitted the granddaddy of all sighs: and his goal was accomplished as Edge looked up over the top of the large spreadsheet and eyed him questioningly. For all of two seconds before casting them back down again and re-immersing himself in the newspaper.

Fuck! He'd had enough of this! Crossly he jumped to his feet and stomped noisily to the kitchen, where with a great deal of clattering and clanging he poured some water into the kettle - before slamming it down to boil. Seething and with lips tightly shut to keep himself quiet he dragged his mug with a loud scrape across the work surface. The spoon jarred harshly against the edge as he added sugar to the coffee - then one more - what the hell! - he deserved something today and it looked like the highlight would be coffee with milk and sugar rather than his customary black and no sugar.

Sulkily he strode back into the room and fell back into his chair with a resounding plop, gracing Edge with an aggravated stare which was totally wasted. A minute later Edge's eyes peeped over the top of the newspaper in his direction.

"You didn't make me any!" the eyes were chagrined.

"You didn't say you wanted any!" came Christian's retort.

"You didn't ask!"

Christian hated angry confrontations and backed down.

"OK - whaddya want?" gracelessly.

"Coffee - the same as you."

Christian scowled.

"I would've thought you'd have got coffee for me - today of all days!"

Edge lowered the paper - a completely nonplussed expression on his innocent face.

"Today? Why - what's special about today?"

Then it came, or rather flooded.

"Don't you know what day it is today?" the hurt expression revisited Christian's eyes.

Edge frowned as if in great concentration. Then slowly he got up and walked over to his diary. Flipping it open he read the top of the page carefully.

"It's the 30th of November, Sweets."

"Yes!" exclaimed Christian. "It's the 30th of November!"

"And.....?"

Edge waited, studying Christian seriously.

"That's what today is - the 30th of November!"

"Yes ...." Edge began carefully choosing his words as if afraid he might upset his partner. "And that means precisely what?"

Christian flung his hands in the air in total despair, shrugging the whole of his body before flipping it round in exasperation before pacing to the far side of the room.

"I just can't believe you could have forgotten!"

Edge examined Christian closely; then horror registered on his face.

"Oh shit!!" Christian spun round and watched his face closely for the signs of comprehension and grief which would surely follow - but the grief was to be his. "You mean I had a dentist appointment and I forgot?!"

Suddenly Edge was a whirlwind of activity as he grabbed up his appointments diary.

"Quick, Christian, tell me ... it was the dentist wasn't it? Or was it some other appointment I should have been at?"

Christian didn't know whether to explode with anger or cry in anguish.

"You haven't got any appointments!" he almost yelled.

Edge shut the book with a snap, befuddlement in his eyes.

"What's all this about then? I mean - what's up with you?"

His disappointment so huge, Christian was now beyond anger. Instead he looked mournfully at his partner.

"You really don't know do you?"

"Know what?"

Christian flung his hands in the air then exasperatedly let them fall to his side again.

"Don't bother!"

And grabbing his leather jacket he announced he was going out, and was gone before Edge could say or do anything more. Once the door had shut behind the blond, a slow grin spread slowly over Edge's face, as he hoped Christian would be gone for at least an hour.

Within barely a minute there was a furtive rapping on the door. Opening it cautiously Edge smiled hugely when he recognized the newcomer.

"Hey," he whispered softly after scanning the road to check that Christian wasn't within sight. "Come on in, he's just left ..."

And placing a chaperoning arm round the shoulders of the newcomer, he quickly closed the door, obscuring them from view.

***~***~***

"All ready?" Edge demanded.

His partner-in-crime nodded his rainbow-hued head vigorously.

"Yeah - all ready. Are you?"

Edge nodded. "As ready as ever ..."

"You're sure you want to do it this way?"

"Oh yes, Jeff - I'm sure ..." and Edge moved up behind Jeff Hardy, who was gazing out of the window at the darkening sky.

"Christian doesn't suspect anything?"

"Not a thing - and we'll be OK - I don't expect him back for about an hour - he's normally gone that long when he storms out in a huff!"

Jeff turned his head, his eyes large and filled with pseudo-sadness.

"Poor Christian - he must feel so sad!"

Edge returned the smile.

"I must admit, I do feel a little bit guilty ..."

"So do I, Edge - after all - Christian is my friend and I'd hate for him to be unhappy."

Edge nodded sadly, then excitement and anticipation lit up his face as he asked:

"Did you bring the baby oil?"

"Oh yes - I'm always prepared - you know me..."
