Funk's Corner: Looking At Christian Cage
February 11, 1969 I won the NWA World Championship from Gene Kiniski in Tampa, Florida. One day later in 2006 on February 12, and only a hundred miles away in Orlando, Florida, Christian Cage defeated Jeff Jarrett for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship.
Christian Cage came to train in the Dory Funk Method of professional wrestling in February of 1998. He had been wrestling for four years in Canada traveling with his friend Edge to independent wrestling shows sometimes in the cold winters driving over the ice on frozen lakes to shorten the distance and save money on gas and tolls.
Some of Christian's teammates training in the Dory Funk Method included Kurt Angle, Edge, Val Venis, Test, Rhino, Christopher Daniels and the Hardy Brothers, Matt and Jeff.
Kurt Angle was a great athlete and Gold Medallist from the Olympic Games, Edge had the look and maturity, Val Venis had the working experience, Test was big and strong, Rhino "The War Machine" carries that name for a reason, he is tough as a Rhinoceros, Christopher Daniels worked hard and had great matches and the Hardys were high risk specialists.
Christian Cage with four years experience in professional wrestling wanted to do everything better. For example, watch closely when Christian brings someone to the mat with a flying mare. Ninety nine percent of the time wrestlers will use what wrestling announcers call a "Snap Mare." Christian adds style and efficiency to the move by taking his opponents head, stepping underneath, rotating his body and bringing his opponent over the top. Christian has an excellence of execution not seen since the days of Pat O'Connor. Christian is a "Ring General." He controls the pace of the wrestling match, sometimes deliberate and sometimes taking extreme risks that the present day audience seems to demand. For example, his leap from the top turnbuckle to the floor in his match with Jeff Jarrett.
Christian Cage can focus on a goal and stick with it through fruition. In his own words on Impact, prior to winning the NWA World Championship Christian said, "The NWA World Championship is the most coveted position in professional wrestling."
Christian's goal since becoming a professional wrestler has been to be the best he could be. Christian's avowed goal since coming to TNA has been to become NWA World Heavyweight Champion. He has accomplished his goals, however in doing so Christian has also created the fiercest opponent of his career.
Now, the question is, can Christian Cage stand up to the challenge of Jeff Jarrett who has been NWA World Champion 5 times and knows what is like to be Champion and how to return to the position most coveted in professional wrestling, NWA World Heavyweight Champion?
