CHRISTIAN CAGE’S DESTINATION: THE SERENGETI
A preview of the “Destination X” NWA World Heavyweight Title Match
By Bill Banks
On Sunday, March 12 live and exclusively on Pay-Per-View, new NWA World Heavyweight Champion “Captain Charisma” Christian Cage makes his first title defense against the number-one contender “The Alpha Male” Monty Brown.
The Alpha Male, a longtime dominant force in TNA Wrestling and a former Super Bowl star for the New England Patriots, finally gets his long-awaited shot at the crown jewel of the sports of kings against the star that electrified TNA as a free-agent acquisition and captured the gold just three months after his debut in Christian Cage.
At November’s “Genesis” Pay-Per-View event, Cage made headlines in the wrestling world when he joined TNA Wrestling and aligned himself against Jeff Jarrett’s army. One month later at December’s “Turning Point” the newcomer barely survived The Alpha Male’s onslaught to advance past his nemesis in line for a title shot. Following January’s “Final Resolution” which saw Cage and Sting defeat Jarrett and Brown in the main event, “Captain Charisma” was ultimately named the new number-one contender.
The decision enraged The Alpha Male, who claimed Cage received preferential treatment while Brown felt once again disrespected by the championship committee for being denied the same chance he believed he rightly deserved.
Following the decision, The Alpha Male began his quest to get his shot by any means necessary. First he went to Jeff Jarrett prior to his match against Cage, getting “The King of the Mountain” to agree to give him a shot if he retained the title. However, Cage achieved his dream that night at “Against All Odds”, beating Jarrett to become the new champion.
Just minutes after Cage’s crowning, The Alpha Male confronted championship committee member Larry Zbyszko and demanded to be given a chance at destiny. Days later on “iMPACT!”, the decision was made official – Monty Brown was granted his demand. As far as the new number-one contender is concerned, the hunt is on. Its open season on the Serengeti on the new NWA World Heavyweight Champion and the challenger isn’t letting his prey escape until the mauling is over.
For “Captain Charisma” the “Destination X” Pay-Per-View championship bout marks his first title defense. Certainly, he overcame the odds to defeat Jarrett and took great pride in silencing his longtime critics. Some say the new champion is still basking in the well-deserved glory of capturing the gold. It’s been a time of celebration for Christian Cage and his family and friends, but at the same time fans of the champion hope his focus remains on taking The Alpha Male very seriously. The first title defense is the most important for Cage, and to lose in one month what it took him 12 years to accomplish would certainly be a setback.
The countdown has begun to the NWA World Heavyweight Title match at “Destination X”, now just days away on Sunday, March 12. Certainly, like any successful predator, The Alpha Male will take every opportunity he can until the Pay-Per-View to attack and weaken his prey. As “Destination X” draws near, Christian Cage is going to have to think and react like the hunted, and not the hunter, for the first time.
The question now is – when The Alpha Male finally strikes at the Pay-Per-View and goes straight for Cage's jugular, will the NWA World Heavyweight Champion be able to survive the attack?
Tune in to “Destination X” on Sunday, March 12 live and exclusively on Pay-Per-View to find out as NWA World Heavyweight Champion “Captain Charisma” Christian Cage defends the gold against “The Alpha Male” Monty Brown!
